Prince Rupert is located at 54°N and 130°19'W. It is located on Kaien Island which is about 770km north of Vancouver. It is in the Pacific Standard Time Zone.
Since the city has natural deep water harbors, it can hold a large amount of ocean traffic with ocean freighters from all over the world loading cargoes of grain, lumber, pulp, mineral ore, sulphur, and coal. Prince Rupert is also closer to Japan (one of Canada's major trading partners) than Vancouver is.
Prince Rupert is located on the northwest coast of B.C. The Alaska Marine Highway ferry system carries people from the third largest ice free harbor in the world. Prince Rupert has an amazing collection of standing totem poles in the north.
The city mostly relies on the fishing, tourism and port industry although; they have started to benefit from the Watson Island Pulp Mill.
Did you know that the Port of Prince Rupert is the closest port to Asia out of all North America, and that its seaport is the deepest ice free harbor in North America.
