Victoria is located on the southern tip of Vancouver
Island, the largest island in British Columbia.
Victoria receives some of the most moderate weather
in all of Canada. It gets an average of 2183 hours of sunshine a year and has an 8 month frost free period each year. Victoria
also has a low precipitation at 5cm average a month and less than 2.5cm in the summer.
Victoria is famous for its gold mines which were
discovered in the late 1850's. The gold mines brought lots of people to the city, from all parts of Canada and eventually
from all over the world. On July 21, 1871 Victoria was named the capital of British Columbia.
Many people choose to live there because of its temperate climate, natural beauty, recreational
sites and good economic opportunities. The area has become a hub for business because of it's proximity to the U.S.A. and
the Pacific Ocean, and also its many air links.
Ferries, air, buses, and cars are the main source of transportation in Victoria. There are
ferries that travel from the mainland carrying tourists & commuters. Air travel is also important on islands.
